Washer and Dryer Removal in Lake Charles: Getting Old Appliances Out

Washer and Dryer Removal in Lake Charles: Getting Old Appliances Out

The short answer

You have three routes: the retailer haul-away when new units are delivered, the free Calcasieu Parish drop-off if you can move them, or a crew that unhooks and hauls them. Klutter Krewe can often disconnect washers and dryers. For a gas dryer, have the gas line handled by a qualified professional.

The short version
  • Many retailers pick up the old washer when they deliver a new one.
  • The parish drop-off takes washers and dryers with doors removed.
  • We can often unhook washers, dryers and dishwashers ourselves.
  • Gas dryer? NFPA says a qualified professional should check the gas line.
  • EPA: 5.3 million tons of major appliances were generated in 2018.
  • Clean out the lint before the dryer moves. It is a fire risk.

A washer and dryer are some of the heaviest things in a house, and they are usually in the tightest spot. Laundry closets, back halls and garages were not designed with removal in mind.

They are also a big part of the waste stream. The EPA reports that 5.3 million tons of major appliances were generated in 2018. An estimated 3.1 million tons of ferrous metal was recovered from shredded appliances that year, leaving 2.1 million tons of appliances to be landfilled. Here is how to get yours out in Lake Charles.

What are your options for an old washer and dryer?

It depends on two things: are you replacing them, and can you move them yourself?

ENERGY STAR notes that many appliance retailers will pick up and recycle an old clothes washer when you buy a new one, and suggests asking for assurance that it will be recycled and not resold.

Can the crew disconnect them?

Often, yes. Washers, dryers, dishwashers and many other appliances are no trouble for us to unhook. If you are elderly or cannot manage it yourself, say so when you book. Tell us what is involved up front, like stacked units or tight stairs, so we arrive with the right tools.

What about a gas dryer?

Treat the gas line with care. The NFPA dryer safety sheet says gas dryers should be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks, and that dryers should be installed and serviced by a professional.

Tell us when you book if the dryer is gas, so the disconnect can be planned before pickup day. Call or text us.

Careful here

If you smell gas at any point, stop, leave the area and call your gas utility from outside. Do not move the dryer or flip switches.

Why clean out the lint first?

Because lint burns. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that failure to clean was the leading factor contributing to the ignition of home clothes dryer fires from 2018 to 2020, at 31 percent. NFPA also lists failure to clean as the leading cause of home dryer fires.

Before the dryer moves, pull the lint screen and wipe out what you can reach. If you are replacing it, clean the vent line too so the new dryer starts clean.

Worth knowing

Replacing units? Clear a straight path from the laundry area to the door and measure the tightest turn. It saves time on both removal and delivery.

When does a pickup make the most sense?

When moving the units is the hard part, or when they are part of a bigger job like a move-out or estate cleanout. Our appliance and heavy item removal service covers the unhooking, the lifting and the haul.

What Lake Charles Homeowners Ask About Washer and Dryer Removal

These are the questions that come up before most appliance pickups. If yours is different, send a photo and ask.

Will you disconnect my washer and dryer?

Often, yes. Washers, dryers, dishwashers and many other appliances are no trouble for us to unhook. If you are elderly or cannot manage it yourself, say so when you book. Tell us what is involved up front so we bring the right tools.

What about a gas dryer?

Tell us before the pickup. NFPA advises that gas dryers be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks, and that dryers be installed and serviced by a professional.

Will the store take my old washer?

Often, when you buy a new one. ENERGY STAR notes that many appliance retailers will pick up and recycle your old clothes washer when you purchase a new one, and suggests asking for assurance it will be recycled rather than resold.

Can I take a washer or dryer to the parish drop-off?

Yes. The Calcasieu Parish convenience centers accept washers and dryers as white goods, as long as they are freon-free and the doors are removed. The centers are free for parish residents with a driver’s license.

How much does washer and dryer removal cost?

Pickup service starts at $125. The final price depends on volume, material type, labor and disposal requirements. Adding other items to the same trip usually makes more sense than a separate haul.

Before the crew arrives

Empty both units, run the washer’s drain hose into a bucket if you can, clean the lint screen and tell us about gas lines or stairs. For everything else we haul, see what Klutter Krewe will and won’t haul.
