How to Get Rid of a Fridge or Freezer Full of Rotten Food
If the food has been without power too long, it is trash, and the fridge or freezer may be too. Keep the door closed, keep kids away from it, and do not put the unit at the curb with the door on. Refrigerant has to be recovered before disposal. Klutter Krewe takes fridges and freezers still full of spoiled food, with a hazardous waste charge.
- CDC: food stays safe up to 4 hours in a closed fridge and 48 hours in a full freezer.
- When in doubt, throw it out.
- Old fridges are an entrapment risk for kids. The door should come off before disposal.
- Refrigerant must be recovered before a fridge or freezer is scrapped or landfilled.
- The parish drop-off only takes units that are freon-free with doors removed.
- We take full units. Spoiled food adds a hazardous waste charge.
Few jobs are worse than a freezer that died while nobody was looking. Maybe it was a storm, maybe a tripped breaker in the garage, maybe a unit at a relative’s empty house. Either way, the smell arrives before the plan does.
Southwest Louisiana knows this one well from hurricane season. Here is what the federal guidance says about the food, why the appliance itself needs careful handling, and how to get rid of both.
Is the food safe to keep?
Probably not, if the power was off for long. The CDC says that if the doors stay closed, food stays safe up to 4 hours in a refrigerator, 48 hours in a full freezer and 24 hours in a half-full freezer. Perishable food in the refrigerator should be thrown out after 4 hours without power or a cold source.
The CDC’s rule of thumb is short: never taste food to decide if it is safe, and when in doubt, throw it out.
| Unit, doors kept closed | Food stays safe up to |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 4 hours |
| Full freezer | 48 hours |
| Half-full freezer | 24 hours |
Past those windows, you are dealing with spoiled food, and the question becomes how to get it out without making the job worse.
Should you empty it yourself?
You can, but you do not have to. Opening a freezer that has been warm for days releases the worst of the smell and the fluids. If you plan to keep the unit, emptying and cleaning it is the only way forward.
If the unit is going anyway, keeping the door shut and letting a crew take the whole thing is often the cleaner choice. Klutter Krewe takes fridges and freezers that are still full. A unit full of spoiled food carries a hazardous waste charge, so tell us up front what is inside.
After a storm, several units on one street often fail at once. Text us a photo of each unit and tell us which ones are still full. That tells us what to bring.
Why can’t the fridge just go to the curb?
Two reasons: children and chemicals.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns about children trapped in old refrigerators and freezers. Most of the victims were four to seven years old, and in every case the doors could not be pushed open from the inside. The CPSC says the surest fix is taking the door off completely, and that it is unlawful in many local jurisdictions to discard an old refrigerator without removing the door first.
Never leave an old fridge or freezer outside with the door on, even for a day. If the door will not come off, keep the unit where children cannot reach it until it is picked up.
The chemicals are the second reason. Under the EPA disposal requirements, the final person in the disposal chain must make sure the refrigerant is recovered before disposal. The EPA also notes that older appliances may contain mercury, contaminated oils and PCBs.

What are your options in Lake Charles?
It comes down to the condition of the unit and who is doing the lifting.
| Option | What it takes |
|---|---|
| Parish drop-off center | Free for Calcasieu residents with a driver’s license. Units must be freon-free, with doors removed. You empty, prep and haul it. |
| Retailer haul-away | Some stores take the old unit when they deliver a new one. Ask before delivery day. |
| Klutter Krewe pickup | Full or empty. A spoiled-food charge applies to full units. Starting at $125. |
If the unit is empty, working and you have a truck, the parish or a retailer can make sense. If it is full, dead and in a hot garage, that is what our appliance removal service is for.
What Lake Charles Homeowners Ask About Spoiled Fridges and Freezers
These questions come up most after outages and storms. If yours is different, send a photo and ask.
How long does food last in a fridge without power?
According to CDC food safety guidance, food stays safe up to 4 hours in a refrigerator, 48 hours in a full freezer and 24 hours in a half-full freezer, as long as the doors stay closed. After that, perishable food should be thrown out.
Can I put a fridge out at the curb?
Not safely with the door on. The CPSC warns that children have died after getting trapped in old refrigerators and freezers, and says the surest fix is removing the door. Check your local rules before setting any appliance out.
Will the parish drop-off take my old fridge?
The Calcasieu Parish convenience centers accept refrigerators only if they are freon-free and the doors are removed. That means the refrigerant has to be recovered first, and the unit should be emptied before you haul it.
Do you take a freezer that still has food in it?
Yes. Klutter Krewe takes fridges and freezers that are still full. A unit full of spoiled food carries a hazardous waste charge, so tell us what is inside when you book.
Why can’t a fridge just go to the landfill?
Refrigerant has to be recovered first. The EPA says older appliances may also contain mercury, contaminated oils and PCBs, and those hazardous components must be removed before disposal.
