How to Dispose of Paint Cans in Lake Charles

The short answer

Dry out leftover latex paint by mixing it with an absorbent like kitty litter, then leave the lid off. Dried latex paint and its cans can often go in household trash, and the Calcasieu Parish drop-off takes open cans with minimal, dry paint. Never pour paint down a drain. Klutter Krewe takes paint for an added charge once the cans are filled with absorbent.

The short version
  • Latex paint can usually be dried out and thrown away.
  • Mix partly full cans with an absorbent, like kitty litter, and let them harden.
  • The parish drop-off takes open cans with minimal, dry paint.
  • Oil-based paint, stains and thinners need more care. Do not pour them out.
  • Louisiana has no PaintCare program.
  • We take paint for an added charge, cans filled with absorbent first.

Every garage has the shelf. Half-empty cans from the bedroom you painted years ago, the trim color nobody can match, the primer that rusted to the lid. They are easy to ignore until a cleanout forces the question.

Paint is one of the most common leftovers in a house. An EPA-commissioned report from 2007 estimated that the architectural paint thrown away each year equals about 6 to 16 percent of sales, with a best estimate of 10 percent. Here is how to handle your share in Lake Charles.

What kind of paint do you have?

Check the label first, because the answer changes the route. The EPA explains that water-based paints are called latex paints and oil-based paints are called alkyd paints. Cleanup is the quick tell: latex washes out with water, oil-based needs mineral spirits or thinner.

Paint typeHow to handle it
Latex (water-based)Dry it out, then trash the hardened can if local rules allow
Oil-based (alkyd), stains, thinnersKeep lids tight, do not pour out, and ask before pickup
Very old paintHandle with care; older paint can contain lead or mercury

Most homeowner paint is latex, which is the easy one.

How do you dry out latex paint?

Take the lid off and add an absorbent. Baton Rouge advises that cans less than half full can be opened, mixed with an absorbent such as kitty litter, and left to dry. Empty or dried-out latex cans can then go in the trash there. Fuller cans take much longer to harden and are better saved for a collection event.

The EPA says latex paint and its containers can often be thrown out with regular household trash, and suggests contacting your local government about special paint programs. Once the paint is solid, it cannot spill or leak.

Worth knowing

Leave the lid off the dried can. The parish drop-off requires open cans anyway, and an open can shows at a glance that nothing liquid is inside.

What about oil-based paint and thinners?

Treat them with more care. The EPA lists paints among household products that can contain hazardous ingredients, and says improper disposal includes pouring them down the drain, on the ground or into storm sewers.

Keep oil-based paint, stains and thinners in their original cans with the lids on tight. Do not mix them with latex paint to dry them out. If you want them gone, call or text us and tell us what you have before the pickup.

Careful here

Never pour paint or thinner into a storm drain, a ditch or the yard. The EPA counts all three as improper disposal.

What are your options in Lake Charles?

Louisiana does not have a paint take-back program. PaintCare runs paint stewardship programs in twelve states and the District of Columbia, and Louisiana is not one of them. That leaves three practical routes.

Dry it and trash it

Best for a few partly used cans of latex paint. It costs nothing but time.

The parish drop-off centers

Pick It Up Calcasieu lists paint among accepted items at its two free convenience centers, in Lake Charles and Sulphur, as long as the cans are open and any paint left is minimal and dry. The centers are closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays and free to parish residents with a driver’s license.

Have it hauled

Best when paint is part of a bigger garage or shed cleanout. We take paint for an added charge. Fill each can with absorbent material first so nothing liquid is left, and tell us the count when you book. The rest of the garage can go on the same trip through our garage cleanout service.

What Lake Charles Homeowners Ask About Old Paint

These questions come up during almost every garage cleanout. If yours is different, text a photo of the shelf.

Can I throw paint cans in the trash?

Dried latex paint often can. The EPA says latex paint and its containers can often go out with regular household trash, and suggests checking with your local government. Liquid paint should not go in the trash, and nothing should be poured down a drain or storm sewer.

How do I dry out leftover latex paint?

Open the lid and mix the paint with an absorbent such as kitty litter, then let it dry until it is solid. Baton Rouge gives this advice for cans less than half full. Larger amounts take longer and are better saved for a collection program.

Does Calcasieu Parish take paint at the drop-off?

Yes, with conditions. The parish convenience centers accept paint cans that are open, with any paint left in them minimal and dry. They are free for parish residents with a valid driver’s license.

Is there a paint recycling program in Louisiana?

Louisiana is not one of the states with a PaintCare program. PaintCare runs paint stewardship programs in twelve states and the District of Columbia, and Louisiana is not on its list.

Do you take paint?

Yes, for an added charge. Fill each can with absorbent material first so there is nothing liquid left to spill, and tell us how many cans you have when you book.

Before you clear the paint shelf

Sort the cans into latex and oil-based, open the latex ones that are nearly empty, and add absorbent. Set anything rusted or leaking in a bucket. Then decide on the route. For everything else we haul, see what Klutter Krewe will and won’t haul.
