What Junk Removal Will and Won't Take in Lake Charles
Plenty of junk removal companies turn down tires, paint and batteries. Klutter Krewe takes all three, along with furniture, appliances, construction debris and yard waste. Paint and fridges full of spoiled food carry an added charge. Asbestos goes to an abatement contractor. If you would rather haul it yourself, Calcasieu Parish runs two free drop-off centers with their own rules.
- Search “what will junk removal not take” and you get the same list: tires, paint, batteries. We haul all three.
- Paint is taken for an added charge, once the cans are filled with absorbent material.
- Fridges and freezers are taken. A unit still full of spoiled food carries a hazardous waste charge.
- Asbestos is a job for an abatement contractor, not a junk hauler.
- The parish drop-off centers are free for residents, but you load, haul and prep everything yourself.
- Pickup starts at $125. The final price depends on volume, material, labor and disposal.
Every junk removal company has a list of things it will not haul. Many of those lists look alike, and tires, paint and batteries show up on a lot of them.
That leaves a lot of Southwest Louisiana households stuck. The old tractor tire behind the barn, the half-used paint cans in the garage and the dead boat battery can sit there for years when the first company you call says no. This guide covers what we haul, what costs extra, what needs a specialist, and how the free parish option compares.
What does Klutter Krewe take?
Short version: nearly everything that comes out of a house, a garage, a yard or a job site. Here is the list, in plain terms, so you know before you call.
- Furniture and household items: couches, mattresses, dressers, shelving, exercise equipment, boxes and clutter.
- Appliances: washers, dryers, dishwashers, fridges and freezers. We can often unhook washers, dryers and dishwashers ourselves.
- Tires: car and truck tires, and tractor tires too.
- Batteries: car and marine batteries. Batteries can be recycled, so we take them.
- Paint: taken for an added charge. The cans have to be filled with absorbent material first.
- Construction and demolition debris: the leftovers from a remodel or tear-out. See construction debris removal in Southwest Louisiana.
- Yard debris: limbs, brush, old fencing and the pile behind the shed, covered under debris and yard hauling.
- Heavy and awkward items: pianos and anything else that needs more hands. Additional labor or equipment charges may apply.

Heavy items are the ones people hesitate to ask about. Oversized, heavy and awkward pieces are routine for us. Send a few photos of the item and the path out, and we arrive with the right crew and equipment. Our appliance and heavy item removal service covers the details.
Why do so many haulers say no to tires, paint and batteries?
Because each one needs a different disposal route than a truckload of furniture. That takes extra steps, extra sorting and sometimes extra cost, and some companies would rather skip it.
The EPA’s household hazardous waste guidance names paints, cleaners, oils, batteries and pesticides as products that can contain hazardous ingredients. It also lists “putting them out with the regular trash” as improper disposal in some cases. Tires are their own problem. The parish drop-off centers take them only with the rims removed, five per day, per person.
Appliances with refrigerant add one more layer. Under the EPA’s safe disposal requirements for refrigeration equipment, the final person in the disposal chain, such as a scrap metal recycler or landfill, is responsible for making sure the refrigerant is recovered before disposal. That is why a fridge cannot just ride along with a load of boxes and get tipped at the landfill.
When a company says it does not take something, it is usually a business decision, not a law. Ask what they do take before you start hauling things to the curb yourself.
What needs a different route?
Asbestos is the clear one. If you suspect asbestos siding, flooring or insulation, call a licensed abatement contractor before anything is disturbed. That work has its own rules for removal, containment and disposal.
Anything not listed above, ask before the truck comes. Fuel, propane tanks, motor oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals and medical waste each carry their own handling needs, and it is faster to sort that out on the phone than on your driveway. Call or text us and describe what you have.
Do not tuck a gas can or propane tank inside a pile of bagged junk. Pull those items out and set them to the side so the crew can see them. It keeps everyone safe on loading day.
How does the free parish drop-off compare?
Calcasieu Parish residents have a free do-it-yourself option, and it is a good one. Pick It Up Calcasieu lists two Residential Solid Waste Convenience Centers: 5500 B Swift Plant Road in Lake Charles and 2915 Post Oak Road in Sulphur. Both are open 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
| What you are getting rid of | Parish drop-off center | Klutter Krewe pickup |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free for parish residents with a valid driver’s license | Starting at $125, based on volume, material, labor and disposal |
| Who loads and hauls it | You do | The crew does |
| Fridges, freezers, washers, dryers | Must be freon-free, with doors removed | Taken; a spoiled-food charge applies to full units |
| Tires | Five per day, per person, rims removed | Taken, tractor tires included |
| Paint | Cans open, paint minimal and dry | Taken for an added charge, cans filled with absorbent |
| Batteries | Automotive and deep-cycle batteries accepted for recycling | Car and marine batteries taken |
| Business waste | Commercial and industrial waste prohibited | See commercial cleanouts |
If you have a truck, a free afternoon and a small load, the parish centers make sense. If you have a full appliance, more than a few tires or no way to move it, that is where we come in.

Text us a photo of the pile or send us the job details. We get back to every quote request the same business day at the latest.
How do you get paint and a full freezer ready for pickup?
Two items need a little prep or a heads-up. Both are simple, and both keep the pickup moving.
Paint cans
Fill each can with an absorbent material so nothing liquid is left to spill. The parish uses the same idea for its drop-off: cans open, with any paint left in them minimal and dry. Tell us how many cans you have when you book, since paint carries an added charge.
Fridges and freezers with food inside
Tell us up front if the unit is still full, especially after a power outage or a storm. A fridge or freezer full of spoiled food carries a hazardous waste charge. Keep the door shut until the crew arrives, and we handle the rest.
What happens to your stuff after pickup?
Anything that can be recycled gets recycled, batteries included. Usable items can be donated within a reasonable distance. We will not promise that every piece stays out of the landfill, because nobody honestly can.
It still matters. In 2018, the most recent year EPA has published, 80.1% of discarded furniture and furnishings, about 9.68 million of 12.08 million tons, went to landfills, per EPA durable goods data. Setting aside the usable pieces is the part that moves that number. See how junk removal works with Klutter Krewe for the full pickup process.
What Lake Charles Homeowners Ask Before a Junk Pickup
These are the questions we hear most once people know tires, paint and batteries are not a problem. If yours is not here, call and ask.
Do you take pianos?
Absolutely. Oversized, heavy and awkward items are routine for us. Send a few photos of the piano and the path out of the house so we arrive with the right crew and equipment. Additional labor or equipment charges may apply depending on the job.
Will you unhook my washer and dryer?
Often, yes. Washers, dryers, dishwashers and many other appliances are no trouble for us to unhook. If you are elderly or cannot manage it yourself, say so when you book. Tell us what is involved up front so we bring the right tools.
How much does junk removal cost?
Pickup service starts at $125. The final price depends on volume, material type, labor and disposal requirements. Construction debris and other specialty materials can carry additional disposal costs. Our junk removal pricing page explains how a quote comes together.
How fast will I hear back on a quote?
The same business day at the latest, and often within the hour. Photos speed it up. Three or four wide shots plus close-ups of anything large or unusual answer most questions before we even call.
Can I just take it to the parish drop-off myself?
Yes, if you live in Calcasieu Parish and can haul it. The two convenience centers are free with a valid driver’s license. Appliances must be freon-free with doors off, tires are limited to five a day with rims removed, and the centers are closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Do you remove asbestos?
Asbestos needs a licensed abatement contractor. If you suspect it in siding, flooring or insulation, leave it undisturbed and call a specialist first. Once that work is done, we can clear out the rest of the job.
Before you start hauling to the curb
Walk the garage, the shed and the yard once with this list in hand. Pull out the paint, the batteries and anything with fuel, and snap a few photos. That ten-minute pass makes the pickup quicker and the quote more accurate.
